- NGC6397 is a bright globular cluster
- first discovered in 1755. This is a
- fairly loose cluster, making it easy to
- resolve individual stars in small
- instruments. Being located in the far
- southern skies it is not visible in the
- United States. The cluster is about 8000
- times more luminous then the sun, and is
- close to 50 light years across. This is
- regarded as the closest globular, half
- the distance of NGC5139 (Omega Centuri)
- and NGC104.
